  • Three Naga Militants Killed In 60-Hour Operation In Assam

The encounter took place at a place between N Kubin and Herakilo under Haflong police station limits after the NSCN cadres came from neighbouring Nagaland, police sources added.

At least three suspected NSCN (National Socialist Council of Nagaland) cadres, who entered Assam allegedly to extort money from the National Highways Authority of India, were killed in an encounter with security forces in Dima Hasao district on Tuesday. The entire operation took around 60 hours.

The operation was planned and monitored by the highest level of Assam police for a month now, sources said.

Over 300 security force personnel led by the Assam police were part of this operation.

The encounter took place at a place between N Kubin and Herakilo under Haflong police station limits after the NSCN cadres came from neighbouring Nagaland, police sources added.

A cache of arms and ammunition were also recovered from the men by the special units of the Assam police and Assam Rifles.

The NSCN factions have a ceasefire agreement with the government of India and the state government as part of the ongoing peace process.

  • Drugs At Centre Of China’s ‘Three Warfares’ Strategy

The Chinese fund and support Myanmar’s military junta. The junta in turn hire NSCN (IM) and ZRA to fight on their behalf and provide protection to poppy fields

Athisa Koso is in her 50s and has a ready smile and watchful eyes. Mother to nine, her hands are full but she — like many other mothers in some states in the northeast region — has learnt to constantly watch her children closely in silence, looking for changes in behaviour, which would give her a clue as to whether they were in “bad company”.

Ms Koso says she had a dream one night. “In the dream, I saw my son taking number 4,” she told

“Number 4” is the street name for heroin in Nagaland’s Dimapur city.

Ms Koso says she began to watch her son and his friends, and found he would hang out with people older than him and even followed them a few times. Over time her suspicions were confirmed. She decided to take matters into her own hands.

“I insisted that he had to be home for dinner with the family and for evening prayers,” she says. “With a mother’s love, I made him tell me the truth and then sent him to a rehabilitation centre for deaddiction.”

Her son has returned home now and is rid of the drug habit. But she continues to watch over him like a hawk.

Every home in this middle class neighbourhood has a drug user, she tells NDTV.

“Every family here is suffering. There is an emotional burden on everyone, but also a financial one.”

This is the biggest impact of China’s debilitating ‘Three Warfares’ strategy – pumping drugs into India’s northeast to weaken and destroy the fabric of society.

There are countless rehabilitation centres in some of the states in the northeast which are most affected by drug abuse. Children are hooked to a variety of easily available drugs by the time they reach Class 7, data shows.

    The source of these drugs?

Armed insurgent groups like the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah), or NSCN (IM), and the Zomi Revolutionary Army (ZRA), which bring drugs from Myanmar and China for sale in India.

After the outbreak of ethnic violence in Manipur in May 2023 and the subsequent high security in the state, the point of entry of drugs has shifted from the border trading town Moreh in Manipur to neighbouring Mizoram.

  • Nagaland University Researchers Identify Stingless Bee Species To Increase Crop Yield

Nagaland University identifies stingless bee species for agriculture

Tetragonula iridipennis and Lepidotrigona arcifera boost pollination efficiency.

Pollination by stingless bees improves yield and quality of chilli crops.

Researchers at Nagaland University have identified stingless bee species that can be used to increase quality and quantity of agricultural yield through pollination, according to officials. The stingless bee species identified are Tetragonula iridipennis Smith and Lepidotrigona arcifera Cockerell.

The research has been published in several reputed, peer-reviewed journals, including International Journal of Farm Sciences.

According to Avinash Chauhan, Scientist and Principal Investigator (AICRP Honeybees and Pollinators), Department of Entomology, School of Agricultural Sciences, Nagaland University, “Stingless bees could be used for pollination without fear of being stung. They are known for their popular medicinal honey and pollination potential, which paves the way formulation of crop pollination calendars to benefit all stakeholders. The honey produced by the bees during the experiments also provided extra income besides good crop production.”

“Our team found that chilli crop, when pollinated by these bees, increases the crop production and quality as compared to crop where pollination is not accomplished. For supplementing the pollination deficit in chilli, stingless bees and honeybee species like A dorsata, A florea and other wild bees like halictid bees, syrphid bees and Amegiella bees need to be conserved,” Chauhan added.

In king-chilli the per cent fruit set was increased to 29.46 per cent over non pollinated crop (21.00 per cent). Likewise in Chilli (Capsicum annum), the fruit set and healthy fruits were increased by 7.42 per cent and 7.92 per cent over non-pollinated crop. Similarly, seed weight which is an indicator of viability or germination increased by 60.74 per cent when pollinated by stingless bees.

This is the maiden attempt to work out the pollination potential of stingless bees and quality production of honey, which led to increased income and sustainable livelihood. Earlier, it was difficult to use honeybees for pollination of crops (inadequate pollination) due to their natural attributes.

  • 3 Dead In Heavy Rain, Landslides In Assam, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland

Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, along with thunderstorms and gusty winds are predicted in all northeastern states from May 29 to June 1.

Three people, including a child, died in three northeastern states while normal life in most of the states in the region was badly affected due to intermittent light to moderate rain triggered by a depression in the Bay of Bengal, officials said on Friday.

An official of the Mizoram Disaster Management Authority said that one person died and another was injured as a wall collapsed at Thuampui in Mizoram’s Aizawl on Friday after incessant rains during the past 24 hours.

According to the official, a retaining wall collapsed causing the death of Lalnunmawia, 36, while Lalfakzuala, 35, was injured and is under medical treatment.

Another official said that schools in Aizawl district remained closed for the second consecutive day on Friday as incessant rain lashed the mountainous state, triggering landslides in different parts of the state.
